Becoming a foster carer

Anyone can apply to be a London foster carer, so long as they have the qualities needed to look after children who cannot live with their parents. There is no maximum age limit for being a foster carer.

You can apply to be a London foster carer:

  • whether you have your own children or not
  • if you are single, married or living with a partner
  • if you are in or out of work
  • whether you live in your own home or rent
  • if you have a spare bedroom
  • whatever your race, religion or sexuality

Other factors to consider

Other factors which will be taken into account will include:

  • Health – are you fit and able to foster for now and the foreseeable future?
  • Finances – can you afford to foster?
  • Home – is it safe for a child or young person?
  • Friends and family – are there people who can support you to foster?
  • Past – whether you have lived abroad and any previous convictions.
  • Experience with children and young people – through family, work, or volunteering.

All agencies will claim to deliver 24 hour support, seven days a week, 365 days per year. In extreme circumstance are they able to get support out to you quickly?
